Chatam Saw Mill in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the oldest and largest saw mill in Asia. Chatham Saw Mill is owned by the Forest Department. People can witness the history while visiting the mill here. This mill is closed on Mondays and other holidays. Mill visiting hours are from 8 AM to 2:30 PM. During World War II, when the Japanese army occupied the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, they bombed here. A huge hole was made here to detonate the bomb. The mill was restored after India's independence. A variety of home construction materials, furniture and fine handicrafts are seen here.

Chatham Sawmill is an antique sawmill that is located in Chatham Island, Port Blair. The mill was set up in 1883 by the British during their rule; the mill got its raw materials from the forests surrounding Chatham Island. The mill happens to be one of the oldest and largest in all of Asia. The British used a huge quantity of timber to produce various products for their use and exports. The Japanese destroyed this sawmill by bombing the island during World War II and invaded the islands controlled until 1945.

A place to visit in the city tour of Port Blair.. Chatham Saw Mill are Asia’s largest and oldest saw mill, It's located on Chatham Islands.. Saw Mill is connected to Port Blair through a 100 meter long bridge.. Hence most of the logs/woods are transported via sea root.. You will be able to watch the different processes like bringing the woods into the mill, sorting, cutting and storing. You will be able to spot the bomb crater left by Japanese Ordnance in World War 2.. Kindly take guide available at 100 to 200 Rs. according to group size.. That will make your experience better.. There is a modern museum in the compound of the Chatham Saw Mill complex and great collection of wood based work and carvings that take our breath away with the intricate designing which is done on it.. Museum shows all details about , why and how it was constructed, construction of bridge to connect the mill, damage done to mill during world war and various types of woods and its artifacts.. There is also a shop from where one can buy wooden articles.. Worth a visit..

It is wood cutting mill/ factory set up at the time of British rule in 1860s. It is a huge complex housing the factory, a museum of products produced there, shops selling local products and eatables. The entry ticket is rs 20 per adult. The ticket can be used to visit museum and the factory. One can see the actual process of how wood is cut there which is not very interesting actually. The place is around 5 kms from the main area of port blair called Aberdeen Bazaar.
